John Philip Sousa signs a typed letter of acceptance to attend the banquet.
Typed Letter signed: "John Philip Sousa", 1p, 8x10½. Great Lakes, Illinois, 1917 October 6. On letterhead of the Office of the Musical Director, U. S. Naval Training Station, to Louis R. Dresler, New York City, New York. In full: "Of course you can count on me for the banquet on November 7th. The only thing with would interfere would be if I am ordered away on government duty. Very sincerely yours". John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) is known chiefly for writing over 100 marches, including such classics as The Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post, earning him the title of "The March King". Sousa, who had studied violin and trombone during his childhood, joined the U.S. Marine Band at age 13, playing with the group from 1867-1872. After later playing in popular orchestras, he returned in 1880 as director of the Marine Band, which is called the "President's Own". In addition to his many musical compositions, Sousa wrote five books, including three novels and an autobiography. Fold creases through "J" of John. Fine condition.
