JOHN QUINCY ADAMS WARD
The sculptor of American heroes replies to a collector who caught him
in a good mood, smoking his after dinner cigar.
Autograph Letter signed: "J Q A Ward", 1 page, 4½x7. No place,
no date. On personal letterhead to "My dear Miss Walter", in full:
"Your pleasant little note was irresistible especially as it came just as
I had lighted my after dinner cigar, while the general mood was at full tide. So
here goes the autograph, promptly and cheerfully, with a line attached to it -
You are born to good fortune. Yours sincerely". John Quincy Adams Ward
(1830-1910) was a successful sculpture of busts before earning fame as a
sculptor of heroic figures in public places. Among his many works statures
are Shakespeare in New York's Central Park, "The Good Samaritan" in the Boston
Public Garden, General John Reynolds at Gettysburg, President James Garfield at
the US Capitol, and President George Washington on the steps of Federal Hall,
Wall Street. Ward was President of the National Academy of Arts (1874-1882)
and of the National Sculptors Society (1893-1904). Normal mailing folds. Toned.
Erasure marks in top edge (unknown hand). Corners lightly creased. Otherwise,
fine condition.
