JOHN RAITT
He pens a letter with details of his swapping of a Playbill for a signed photograph
Autograph Letter signed: "John Raitt", 1 page, 7¼x10¼. No place, October 31, no year. On his personal letterhead to "Dear Warren Hall", in full: "Thank you for your good letter and since I haven't got a Playbill from 'Carnival in Flanders' I'm taking your offer of keeping it. As per your request I'm enclosing an autographed picture. Best regards". Baritone singer John Raitt (1917-2005) came to national attention when he took over the role of Curly in the national tour of Oklahoma (1944). The following year, he debuted on Broadway as the star of Carousel. He took his stage role in The Pajama Game (1954) to the screen (1957). He didn't much like film work, however, preferring to tour in stage performances. Raitt, closely identified with standards he had made famous such as "If I Loved You" and "Hey There". He had a one-man show in the 1980s. John Raitt is the father of popular singer Bonnie Raitt. The two appeared together, and sang at each other's weddings. Carnival in Flanders ran for only six Broadway performances in 1953, a rare flop among Raitt's successful shows. Fine condition.
