Judy Garland's main film rival as an everyday girl with a beautiful voice. In 1937, the
revenue from her two hits, Three Smart Girls and One Hundred Men and a Girl, saved
Universal from bankruptcy. In 1938, Durbin, who would appear in a number of films that
showcased her voice, was awarded a special Academy Award "for bringing to the screen the
spirit and personification of youth."In addition to her acting, the soprano began recording
for Decca as she was just turning 15. Disillusioned with Hollywood, she retired from films
and has lived in France since 1950 with her third husband, Charles David, who directed
her 1945 film Lady on a Train. While in college in the 1930s, JOHN RAITT began
drawing portraits of famous people. He sent his artwork to each subject with a request that it
be autographed and returned to him. Two horizontal folds. Lightly creased. Lightly frayed at
right edge. Tape affixed at left corners. Light surface damage at corners. Otherwise, fine
condition.
