JOHN RAITT and EDMUND MUSKIE

Original portrait of Muskie, drawn by John Raitt, signed by both!

Original Art inscribed and signed: "To John Raitt/with best wishes/Ed Muskie", 5x8. Pencil drawing also signed by the artist "Raitt". Edmund Muskie (1914-1996), a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, was Governor of Maine (1955-1959) before becoming a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maine (1959-1980). As a Senator, Muskie was a principal architect of the landmark environmental legislation of the early 1970s, working successfully to build bipartisan support for it. He was the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 1968, and the early frontrunner for the Presidential nomination four years later until, during the New Hampshire primary, he appeared to cry while defending his wife from a harsh newspaper attack. Muskie concluded his public service as U.S. Secretary of State (1980-1981). While in college in the 1930s, JOHN RAITT began drawing portraits of famous people. He sent his artwork to each subject with a request that it be autographed and returned to him. Two horizontal folds. Tape affixed at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
