JOHN REDMAN COXE. Autograph Letter signed: "John Redman Coxe", 1p, 5x7¾ with blank integral leaf. No place, 1850 January 27. To [?] P. Beck, in full: "The precarious state of my health confines me greatly to my house, and more especially prevents my going out in the evenings. I am therefore obliged to decline your very kind invitation for Tuesday next. Most respectfully your obedient servant". Coxe (1773-1864) joined his teacher, friend and colleague Benjamin Rush in fighting the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia (1793). He became an early American advocate of vaccination, vaccinating himself against smallpox with cultures given him by Thomas Jefferson, and writing an influential book on the subject. Mounting remnants on integral leaf. Pencil notation (unknown hand) in upper right corner. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
