JOHN S. COPLEY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/14/1936 - HFSID 18426
Price: $100.00
JOHN COPLEY. ALS: "John Copley", 1½p,
7x9. 10 Hampstead Square (London), 1936 July 14. Begins: "My
Dear Newton". In part: "Lumsdan told me that you had gone to the
show & been so gratifyingly kind & intelligent about it, & that you
had written a most useful article in the Guardian. I have not actually seen it,
but I can image what you would say. I am sure you did the wisest & most
helpful thing in writing, as you say, about general principles rather than
persons; the public knows so little about prints & is more or less willing
to learn, but most critics give it so little help...." English lithographer
Copley (1875-1950) became President of the Royal Society of British Artists.
Many of his scenes from British life feature dancers (A Lady and a
Dancer), athletes (Lacrosse), horses (Horses Turning into a
Canter) and character studies (Mother and Son, Tea Drinkers).
Folds touch signature. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
