JOHN S. HILLER and WILLIAM H. MacDONALD
Handwritten musical quotation and sentiment of the late 19th century showmen
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "Sincerely yours/John S. Hiller/New York/Feb. 25th. 1897/[He has drawn four measures of music.], on a 6¾x4 album leaf, affixed to a 8¾x5½ page (2 surfaces); and affixed on verso Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely/W. H. MacDonald/The Bostonians/1887/1899", 5½x3 album leaf (2 surfaces). Typed caption affixed below each album leaf. JOHN S. HILLER was music director of the De Wolf Hopper Opera Company, formed in 1890 to produce the entertainments of comic actor De Wolf Hopper (remembered today for his recitations of "Casey at the Bat"). "Opera company" was used loosely in 19th century America to describe any musical troupe, and the Hiller/Hopper productions were all in the operetta/musical comedy mode, beginning with Castles in the Air. WILLIAM "W. H." MacDONALD was a member of The Bostonians, another musical comedy troupe. They were closely associated with Reginald DeKoven's musical Robin Hood, which the company performed on Broadway in a debut and two revivals between 1899 and 1904. W. H. MacDonald played the part of Little John, popularizing the song "Brown October Ale." He appeared in four other Broadway shows through 1904. Lightly toned. Lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
