JOHN S. PILLSBURY and FRED VON BAUMBACH. Manuscript Letter: "J.S. Pillsbury" as Governor of Minnesota, 1 p, 8½x10¾. On Executive Department letterhead, 2½-inch diameter gold seal affixed at lower left. Attested by "Fred von Baumbach" as Secretary of State. St. Paul, 1881 October 28. To A.B. Cornell, Governor of New York. In full: "I take pleasure in recommending my Private Secretary, Mr. Frank H. Carleton, whose signature accompanies this, as a proper and worthy gentleman for the position of Commissioner of Deeds of the State of New York, resident in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I trust the appointment may be made. Very respectfully." John Sargent PILLSBURY (1828-1901) was a New Hampshire born businessman and banker who, along with his nephew, Charles Alfred Pillsbury, the son of Pillsbury's brother, George, founded the Pillsbury flour milling company in 1872. The company was destined to grow into the largest flour producer in the world, and then into a multinational food conglomerate owning such brand names as Burger King and Green Giant. Pillsbury also served several terms in the Minnesota state senate as a Republican before becoming the state's governor (1876-1882). Fred von BAUMBACH was Minnesota's Secretary of State from 1880-1887. Horizontal folds and light vertical fold, both touching signature. Slightly soiled. Staple holes in upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
