JOHN S. PILLSBURY and FRED VON BAUMBACH. Manuscript Letter:
"J.S. Pillsbury" as Governor of Minnesota, 1 p, 8½x10¾. On
Executive Department letterhead, 2½-inch diameter gold seal affixed at lower
left. Attested by "Fred von Baumbach" as Secretary of
State. St. Paul, 1881 October 28. To A.B. Cornell, Governor of New York.
In full: "I take pleasure in recommending my Private Secretary, Mr. Frank
H. Carleton, whose signature accompanies this, as a proper and worthy gentleman
for the position of Commissioner of Deeds of the State of New York, resident in
the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I trust the appointment may be made. Very
respectfully." John Sargent PILLSBURY (1828-1901) was a New Hampshire
born businessman and banker who, along with his nephew, Charles Alfred
Pillsbury, the son of Pillsbury's brother, George, founded the Pillsbury flour
milling company in 1872. The company was destined to grow into the
largest flour producer in the world, and then into a multinational food
conglomerate owning such brand names as Burger King and Green Giant. Pillsbury
also served several terms in the Minnesota state senate as a Republican
before becoming the state's governor (1876-1882). Fred von
BAUMBACH was Minnesota's Secretary of State from 1880-1887. Horizontal folds
and light vertical fold, both touching signature. Slightly soiled. Staple holes
in upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
