$10 check signed by John Sherman, author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, in 1872. Sherman was a U. S. Senator from Ohio when he signed this check.
Check signed "John Sherman" in brown ink. Endorsed on verso in black ink. 8x2¾. July 25, 1872. Check for $10, made out to "Custer & Brother [illegible]" and drawn on Sherman's account at the First National Bank in Mansfield, Ohio. Republican Sherman (1823-1900) served as Ohio Congressman from 1855 to 1861 and U.S. Senator from 1861 to1877, when he became Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes (1877-1881). He was then elected U.S. Senator in place of James A. Garfield, who had been elected President, and served from 1881 to 1897. Sherman was McKinley's Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898, resigning because of ill health the day Congress declared war on Spain. His name will forever be remembered as the author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the first major federal action to curb the power of the giant business monopolies. He was the younger brother of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. Normal bank cuts.Lightly toned, stained and creased. Signature is lightly smeared but legible. Ink transference, which touches handwriting but not signature. Rounded corners. Light tear at bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
