Check Double Signed: "John Sherman" and "J.S." on a two-cent Washington revenue stampas U.S. Senator from Ohio, 7½x2½. Mansfield, Ohio, 1863 October 27. Drawn on the Farmers' Bank. Sherman has dated the stamp. In full: "Pay in Currency to John Bell or Bearer Forty Dollars." Republican Sherman served as Ohio Congressman from 1855-1861 and U.S. Senator from 1861-1877, when he became Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes (1877-1881). He was then elected U.S. Senator in place of James A. Garfield, who had been elected President, and served from 1881-1897. Sherman was McKinley's Secretary of State from 1897 to April 25, 1898, resigning because of ill health the day Congress declared war on Spain. His name will forever be remembered as the author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the first major federal action to curb the power of the giant business monopolies. JOHN BELL may have been the politician and judge from Ohio (1796-1869). Bell was Mayor of Fremont, Ohio and served as a U.S. Congressman before becoming a Probate Judge. Pinched cancellation does not touch signature. File hole at left margin. Fine condition.
