JOHN SHERMAN
John Sherman, author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, signed this manuscript letter to U. S. Senator George F. Edmunds on Treasury Department stationery in 1880 as Secretary of the Treasury. In it, he acknowledges receipt of a communication about a Vermont U. S. Marshall's account being settled.
Manuscript letter signed "John Sherman" as Secretary of the Treasury. Black ink notations in top corners in unknown hand.1 page, 7¾x9¾, 1 sheet folded, on ruled stationery from the U. S. Treasury Department, docketed on verso. Jan. 27, 1880. Addressed to the Honorable George F. Edmunds in the U. S. Senate. In full: "Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 17th instant in relation to the settlement of the account of George P. Foster, late U. S. Marshall, Dist. Of Vermont, and in reply to enclose the report [not enclosed] of the First Comptroller on the subject, for your information. Very respectfully,". Republican GEORGE F. EDMUNDS (1828-1919) represented Vermont in the U.S. Senate from April 3, 1866 until his resignation on Nov. 1, 1891. He was also a member of the Electoral Commission that decided the hotly contested election of 1876. Republican JOHN SHERMAN (1823-1900) served as Ohio Congressman from 1855 to 1861 and U.S. Senator from 1861 to1877, when he became Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes (1877-1881). He was then elected U.S. Senator in place of James A. Garfield, who had been elected President, and served from 1881 to 1897. Sherman was McKinley's Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898, resigning because of ill health the day Congress declared war on Spain. His name will forever be remembered as the author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the first major federal action to curb the power of the giant business monopolies. He was the younger brother of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. Lightly toned and creased. Signature and handwriting are lightly smeared but legible. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
