JOHN SHERMAN
John Sherman, author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, signed
this manuscript letter, written on U. S. Senate Chamber stationery in 1888, to
James S. Lehmaier, New York City Republican Leader to accept a toast at an
upcoming dinner. Sherman was a U. S. Senator from Ohio when he signed this
letter.
Manuscript letter signed "John Sherman", 1p, 5x8. Senate
Chamber, Washington, 1888 February 6. To New York City Republican leader
James S. Lehmaier, Esq. In full: "Your note of the 5th suggesting
a toast to which I should respond at the proposed dinner on the 11th inst. is
received and is entirely satisfactory." The New York City Republican Club
held its Lincoln Day Dinner on February 11, 1888. Benjamin Harrison, elected
President nine months later, spoke at the dinner. Republican Sherman
(1823-1900) served as Ohio Congressman from 1855 to 1861 and U.S.
Senator from 1861 to1877, when he became Secretary of the Treasury
under President Hayes (1877-1881). He was then elected U.S. Senator in
place of James A. Garfield, who had been elected President, and served from 1881
to 1897. Sherman was McKinley's Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898,
resigning because of ill health the day Congress declared war on Spain. His
name will forever be remembered as the author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of
1890, the first major federal action to curb the power of the giant business
monopolies. He was the younger brother of Union General William Tecumseh
Sherman. Lightly creased with minor soiling at top edge. Two file holes in
left margin, else in fine condition.
