Manuscript letter signed "John Sherman". Black ink marks in top right and bottom left corner, both in unknown hand. 2 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, on stationery of the U. S. Senate, with two binder holes at left edge. Dec. 21, 1886. Addressed to James P. Foster, "Chairman &c". In full: "My dear Sir: Your kind note of the 20th inviting me to attend a dinner to be given in New York by the Republican Club on the 26th of January next, is received. I would accept with great pleasure but for the nature of my official du-ties which require me to be here each day of the session. You have my hearty good wishes for the success of the Republican Club in the City of New York and I sincerely hope that its in=fluence and activity will restore the Republican party again to its just control in national affairs. Very truly yours.". JOHN P. FOSTER was President of the New York City Republican Club. Republican JOHN SHERMAN (1823-1900) served as Ohio Congressman from 1855 to 1861 and U.S. Senator from 1861 to1877, when he became Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes (1877-1881). Sherman was McKinley's Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898, resigning because of ill health the day Congress declared war on Spain.
