JOHN STEINBECK
Autograph Letter signed in1966, declining to attend an encampment of the Bohemian Grove. He remarks (ironically?), "If I had any character, I would accept instantly, but having none I'm afraid I must go the symbolic motions of continuing the long work I am well into."
Typed Letter signed: "John Steinbeck", 1 page 8½x11. Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, 1966 March 18. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Powers". In full: "I have your kind letter of 9 March with its tempting invitation to visit the Bohemian Grove this summer. If I had any character, I would accept instantly, but having none I'm afraid I must go the symbolic motions of continuing the long work I am well into. For years I have heard of this place but have never visited it. It makes me sad to have to refuse. Thank you for the invitation and I assure you my regrets are very real. Yours". Novelist John Steinbeck (1902-1968), who was noted for his portrayals of hard-working people and social themes, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. The works of the famed novelist, include Tortilla Flat (1935), Of Mice and Men (1937), The Grapes of Wrath (1939; Pulitzer Prize, 1940), Cannery Row (© 1937, published in 1945) and East of Eden (1952). In all, Steinbeck wrote 16 novels, 6 non-fiction works, and five collections of short stories. The Bohemian Grove is a summer retreat for members and guests of San Francisco's Bohemian Club, founded in 1972. Lightly creased. Horizontal folds - not affecting signature. 2 small rust stains.
