JOHN STEINBECK
The Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author writes to editor Norman Cousins, declining
to write an article on California.
ALS: "John", 1p, 8x12½ lined yellow paper. New York, 1967 May 6. Printed return address
label affixed in upper margin. To Norman Cousins. In full: "Belated answer, but I only
recently returned. Regarding California article - I think not. It's so long since I've been there
that it is largely strange to me. Sorry but it's not my cup any more. I'd have to research it like
any other foreigner. Besides, I'm going to rest quite a bit at Sag Harbor, I hope. But thanks for
asking me." Lightly creased. ¾-inch separation at fold at blank left margin. Overall, fine
condition. Accompanied by envelope hand addressed by Steinbeck to: "Norman
Cousins/Saturday Review/380 Madison Ave,/New York, N.Y. 10017". Vertical crease touches
"7" in address, lightly tanned at top, overall fine. Steinbeck had published the last of his
"California novels", Sweet Thursday, ten years earlier. The prolific author's stories of
California's people also includes, The Pastures of Heaven (1932), The Red Pony (1933), To a
God Unknown (1933), Tortilla Flat (1935), In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men
(1937), The Long Valley (1938), The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Cannery Row (© 1937,
published in 1945) and East of Eden (1952). NORMAN COUSINS edited the "Saturday
Review" for more than a quarter of a century (1942-1971, 1973-1977). He became a
best-selling author himself in chronicling his triumph over a debilitating disease through
positive thinking and humor (Anatomy of an Illness, 1979). Two items.
