Rare ALS: "John Steinbeck", 1 page, 8½x11. Los Gatos, Calif., 1938 October 13. To Mr. Besig. In full: "I regret that the press of work makes it impossible for me to serve on the committees suggested. I have already written to Dr Brown to this effect. I sincerely hope that the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union] is effective." Steinbeck, noted for his portrayals of "the common man", won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. His works include Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath (1940 Pulitzer Prize), Cannery Row and East of Eden. Lightly creased. ¼-inch separation at blank left lower horizontal fold, pinhole at blank lower cross-fold, staple holes at upper blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
