JOHN STEINBECK
The author signs a typed 1964 letter to IBM, discussing typefaces and servicing of his word processor.
TLS: "John Steinbeck," 1 page, 8½x11. Sag Harbor, Long Island, 1964 August 17. To Bob Langan at the Bronx Office of IBM. In full: "I have your letter of August 13 and since it arrived the three type faces 'Letter Gothic, Dual Gothic, Dual Gothic 72 and Scribe' and (sic) have arrived. The other one 1403 Optical Scanning has not arrived but I would imagine that it will be here soon. Also I should think it would be the same price as the others. Therefore I am enclosing my check for $60. to pay for it also to save myself that trouble when the last one comes. I still have not heard from you regarding a bill for $31 which is for something I do not remember. Thank you for your quick action on this. I do want the largest and the smallest types you have for different purposes. Therefore, when you develope (sic) a smaller elite, I shall be glad to hear about it. When I go back to New York, which I hope will be as late in the fall as !ossible (sic), I should imagine that this machine will need servicing or whatever you do to it to keep it in perfect condition." Steinbeck (1902-1968) was awarded the 1940 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for The Grapes of Wrath. He was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels, especially The Winter of Our Discontent. Other works include Of Mice and Men, Tortilla Flat, and East of Eden. Probably typed by Steinbeck who is writing about typefaces for his IBM typewriter. Receipt stamp on verso: "ibm/bronx office/aug 18 929 am 1964". Fine condition.
