JOHN STUART
Signature of the 60-year film veteran, a star in the silent era. A rare signature.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "All good wishes/John Stuart", 3x1½. Scottish actor John Stuart (1898-1979), born John Croall a veteran of the trenches in World War I, had a six-decade film career. A star of the silent era, beginning in 1920, he continued to appear in TV series and feature films through Superman (1978), in which he played the 10th Elder. An avid sportsman in his youth, Stuart was a co-founder, with Alfred Hitchcock, of the Kinema Cricket Club. (He appeared in Hitchcock's Number 17 (1932). Although Stuart had prominent roles in many film dramatizations of World War I, including The Flight Commander (1927), his son - Jonathan Croall, currently writing a biography of his father - is quoted as saying that his father was haunted in later years by war memories, personally withdrawn and isolated despite his continued presence on screen. Lightly toned. Corners slightly worn. Paper remnants on verso. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
