Ink signature on an autograph card signed in Arlington, Massachusetts, where
he lived for half a century
Printed Card signed in ink: "JT Trowbridge/Arlington/Mass./April 6
1869", 5x2¾ autograph card. Author John Townsend Trowbridge (1827-1916), a
friend of Mark Twain and Walt Whitman, bought a house in Arlington,
Massachusetts in 1867 and lived in it until his death. He also spent much time
in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he named the local landmarks Spouting Rock and
Blowing Cave. Trowbridge wrote poetry, and both juvenile and adult novels,
some of the latter, like The Old Battle-Ground (1859) bearing a strong
anti-slavery theme. His 1867 poem, "Darius Green and His Flying Machine,"
confidently predicted manned flight. Some of his books were written under the
pen name Paul Creyton. Fine condition.
