Tyndall handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1889, acknowledging the recipient's "desire tohave [sic] something from me is expressed in such cordial terms." Tyndall added, though, that he doubted that he could meet the recipient's expectations.
Autograph letter signed "John Tyndall". 2 pages, 4¼x6¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, on stationery imprinted with "Hind Head House,/Haslemere.".March 18, 1889. Addressed to "My dear Sir". In full: "My dear Sir Had I not mislaid your note, I should have replied toit [sic] earlier. Andnow [sic] I must run the risk of using the address not of the last note, but ofthe[sic] first which you were good enough to address tome [sic] this year. I have only to day [sic] that your desire tohave [sic] something from me is expressed in such cordial terms, and is backed by such liberal terms, that you may rely upon my desire todo [sic] what I can tomeet [sic] your wishes. I fear, however, that your expectations are such as it will be difficult, if not impossible torealize [sic]. Believe me Yours very faithfully". Tyndall had a home in Hindhead, Surrey, England from 1885 until his death. He spent many of his later years there. Tyndall (1820-1893, born in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, Ireland) was a physicist who answered the age-old question of youngsters by showing that the sky is blue because of fine particles in the atmosphere. He studied the diffusion of light by large molecules and dust, which became known as the Tyndall effect. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Page was neatly torn from pad or notebook on left edge. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
