First day cover signed "Kindest/Regards/John Van Ryn" in blue ink. 6½x3½. First day cover honoring 100 years of tennis with b/w cachet at left edge. Postmarked Forest Hills, New York, Aug. 31, 1974. With color 10¢ postage printed in upper right corner with embossed tennis ball. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Van Ryn (1905-1999, born in Newport News, Virginia) was one-half of one of the most doubles teams of the 1930s, with Willmer Lawson Allison, Jr. Van Ryn and Allison won doubles championships at the U. S. Open (1931, 1935), Wimbledon (1929-31) and French Open (1931), with appearances as finalists five times at the U. S. Open and Wimbledon. The two were also Davis Cup team members between 1929 to 1936. Van Ryn was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1963. Lightly toned, creased and rippled, otherwise in fine condition.
