conjoined leaves. Bristol, 1903 February 19. On imprinted letterhead of
"J.W. Arrowsmith Publisher" to Mrs. Anstruther (Clayre Tennant Anstruther).
Begins: "Dear Madam". In full: "Perhaps you will
remember that a year or two ago I wrote you with reference to literary work and
suggested that if you had any story in hand, or other work which you were
wishful to place that you would kindly let me see it. Your reply was to the
effect that at the moment you had nothing in hand. It may be however that
you may now be in a position to [word crossed out] see your way to let
me have the pleasure of publishing some of your work. I am yrs
faithfully". John W. Arrowsmith was a descendent of the noted London
map-producing family. John Arrowsmith (not this signer) had worked for his uncle
in the firm from 1810-1832, when he started his own business. His company was
best known for its 1841 map of Texas, which was widely reproduced. J.W.
Arrowsmith, Publisher, which was based in Bristol, released works ranging from
the popular Three Men In a Boat, which was originally intended to be
a serious travelogue, and Prince Prigio (both 1889) to Upper Severn
Companion and Bristol Channel Tide Table. Lightly creased with folds,
lower horizontal fold at the "J" and at the "S" and "th" of Arrowsmith. Ink
lightly smudged at one word. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
