the Queen's University Medical College (Belfast).
Autograph Letter signed: "John W. Byers", 2 pages (front and
verso), 4½x7. Dreenagh House, Lower Crescent, Belfast, 1898 January 7. To
"My dear President", in full: "I have much pleasure in handing
to you, as the head of my college, the accompanying volumes for the Library.
They are the Transactions of the International Congress of Obstetrics and
Gynecology, held in Geneva in Sept., 1896. They will, I feel sure, form useful
books of reference. With best wishes for this year I am, Very truly yours".
Physician and scholar John W. Byers (1853-1920), born in Shanghai to
Presbyterian missionary parents, was Chair of Midwifery at the Medical
College, Queen's University Belfast, from 1893 to 1920. He wrote many
papers, and addressed many medical meetings, on the topic of obstetrics, and
wrote an illustrated history of midwifery. Byers's interests extended beyond
medicine, however. A President of the Belfast Literary Society and the
Belfast Philosophical Society, he did extensive research on the history,
language and folkways of Ireland. He introduced study of the Irish language
into the Medical School's curriculum. Fold on bottom margin. Stained throughout.
Adhesive residue on bottom margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Toned on
outer edges. Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
