Slip of paper signed by John W. Daniel in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1886
Signature: "Jno.W.Daniel/Lynchburg Va-/March 1886". 7¼x1¾. American Civil War mavens may know Daniel (1842-1910) better as "the Lame Lion of Lynchburg". He was an officer in the Confederate State Army from 1861 to 1864 and a staff officer under Jubal A. Early, attaining the rank of major, but was permanently disabled at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864) and was forced to resign his commission. He was later a Democratic U. S. Representative from Virginia's 6th Congressional District (1885-1887) and U. S. Senator from Virginia (1887-1910), as well as a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1901. Lightly toned. signature is lightly smeared in places but legible. Irregular top and bottom edge. Lightly discolored at right edge. Neatly torn from album at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
