Nixon's White House Counsel and Watergate testifier signs an index card.
Signature: "John Dean", 5x3 card. John Dean (b. 1938) was White House Counsel from 1970-1973, called by the FBI the "Master manipulator of the [Watergate] cover-up". He broke ranks with the administration, however, testifying before the Senate Watergate committee (June 1973) about the President's involvement, charges later confirmed by the White House tapes. In exchange for testifying for the prosecution in several trials, he was charged with only a single felony, serving a 4-month minimum security sentence. Disbarred, he found a new career as an LA-based investment banker. He early books, beginning with Blind Ambition (1976), involved him in several disputes with other Watergate figures. Since retiring from business in 2000, he has written several more, becoming increasingly critical of the current Republican Party and his leaders. Calling himself a "Goldwater conservative," a libertarian tradition he claims his former party has abandoned, Dean called for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
