Autograph Letter signed: "John W. Foster", 1 page, 4½x7. Underbluff, Henderson Harbor, N. Y., 1900 June 20. On personal letterhead "to the Independent", in full: "I am in receipt of check for $50, with thanks. Very truly". Lawyer, journalist and diplomat John Watson Foster (1836-1917) was a Union army colonel in the Civil War. He served as US Minister to Mexico (1873-1880), Russia (1880-1881) and Spain (1883-1885). He replaced the ailing James Blaine as Secretary of State in the final year of Benjamin Harrison's Presidency (1892-1893). He advised the Chinese government on negotiation of the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895), which ended the Sino-Japanese War. Foster was the grandfather of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and of CIA Director Allen Dulles. Light surface creases. Lightly toned. Normal mailing fold. Lighty soiled. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
