JOHN W. GARDNER
Portion of a typescript signed the distinguished author who served as LBJ's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.
Typescript signed: "John W Gardner", 1p, 8½x11. Paragraph from one of his books. In full: "If a citizens' movement can prove its capacity to achieve specific and important objectives, the citizen may recover the hope - now virtually lost - that he can regain command of the vast and invisible bureaucratic processes that dominate his life. He may rediscover that the vitality of his society is inseparable from his own creative part in it. He may even learn how much we need each other." John William Gardner (1912-2002), who had served as President of the Carnegie Corporation, was Lyndon B. Johnson's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare from 1965-1968. During Gardner's tenure, Medicare was launched and the landmark Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was passed. Gardner, who was involved in the creation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and founded Common Cause and Independent Sector, was also the author of several books, primarily on leadership, including Excellence: Can We Be Equal and Excellent Too? (1961), Self-Renewal (1964), No Easy Victories (1968), The Recovery of Confidence (1970), In Common Cause (1972) and On Leadership (1990). He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. Lightly creased with folds, upper horizontal fold at the "Joh" of John and the upper loop of the "G" in Gardner. Staple holes at upper left corner, which has ¼-inch diameter hole from removal from staples. Overall, fine condition.
