Typed Letter signed: "John W. Griggs" as Attorney
General, 1 page, 7½x9¾. Washington, D.C., 1898 February 10. On
official letterhead to Lucien L. Bonheur, President, the Republican Club, 28th
Assembly District, New York. In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge
the receipt of your invitation to attend the administration ball, to be given
under the auspices of the Republican Club, 28th Assembly District of New York,
on the evening of March 3rd. I regret exceedingly that my official duties here
will prevent my going to New York on that occasion. It would give me pleasure to
meet and mingle with the members of your Club, were it possible to do so. With
best wishes for your success and for the success of those principles you
represent, I am very sincerely yours". Griggs (1849-1927) served as
Republican Governor of New Jersey (1895-1898) before being named U. S.
Attorney General under President William McKinley (1898-1901). From 1901 to
1912, he was a Judge on the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague,
Netherlands. Griggs was also a member of the New Jersey state house of
assembly (1875) and state senate from Passaic County (1883-88), a member of the
New York state assembly (1776-1877) and a New Jersey Delegate to the Republican
National Convention in 1888. Multiple mailing folds. Toned around edges. Light
ink smear (legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
