JOHN W. GRIGGS
John W. Griggs signed this letter, typed on U. S. Attorney General
stationery in 1898, regarding the appointment of William M Robertson as U. S.
District Attorney for Nebraska. Griggs was Governor of New Jersey, U. S.
Attorney General under President William McKinley and a Judge on the Permanent
Court of Arbitration at The Hague.
Typed letter signed "JohnW. Griggs". 1 page, 8x10, on
stationery of the Office of the Attorney General. March 28, 1898.
Addressed to Rev. John F. Hurst, Bishop M. E. Church, Washington, D. C.. In
full: "My Dear Sir: Your letter of the 21st inst endorsing the candidacy of
Mr. William M. Robertson for the position of United States District Attorney for
Nebraska, has been received and filed with Mr. Robertson's papers. Very
respectfully yours,". WILLIAM M. ROBERTSON was Mayor of Norfolk, Nebraska
in 1900 and a delegate to the Nebraska state constitutional convention in 1875.
However, he doesn't appear to have been named U. S. District Attorney for
Nebraska. JOHN W. GRIGGS (1849-1927) served as Republican
Governor of New Jersey (1895-1898) before being named U. S. Attorney
General under President William McKinley (1898-1901). From 1901 to 1912, he
was a Judge on the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, Netherlands.
Griggs was also a member of the New Jersey state house of assembly (1875)
and state senate from Passaic County (1883-88), a member of the New York state
assembly (1976-1877) and a New Jersey Delegate to the Republican National
Convention in 1888. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Body of letter, but not
signature, is lightly smeared but legible. Folded in half horizontally and twice
vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
