JOHN W McCORMACK
As House Majority Leader, McCormack responds to a request for autograph on Time cover
Typed Letter signed: "John W. McCormack" as Majority Leader, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1964 June 10. On official letterhead to Barbara Stephens, Los Angeles, California. In full: "Dear Barbara: I am in receipt of your recent letter and am happy to send these few lines to you. I am pleased to sign your "Time" cover which I am returning to you [not included]. With best wished, I am Sincerely yours". Family poverty forced John W. McCormack (1891-1980) to quit school in 8th Grade, but he attended night school and passed the bar exam at age 21. A World War I veteran, trial lawyer and state legislator, McCormack then represented Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives (1928-1971). Alternately Majority and Minority Leader from 1949 to 1963, he was Speaker of the House from 1963 to 1971. After the assassination of President Kennedy, he was second in line for the Presidency for over a year (November 1963-January 1965). Staple holes at upper left corner. File notches (3) at right edge. Stray ink spots at left margin. Lightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
