Typed Letter Signed: "John W. Weeks" as Secretary of War, 1p, 8x10½.Washington, 1924 February 12. To C.C. Hathaway, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am enclosing herewith copies of the letter which I have received from the Fine Arts Commission, reporting its action in the case of erecting a monument over the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and of the reply which the Secretary of the Navy and I have made." JOHN W. WEEKS, who had served in the Massachusetts Naval Brigade (1890-1900) and in the Volunteer Navy during the Spanish-American War (1898), served as Secretary of War under Presidents Harding and Coolidge. On November 11, 1921, the second anniversary of the end of World War I, the unknown soldier of World War I was buried at Arlington National Cemetery after laying in state in the Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was attended by representatives of major nations of the world. The next day, the world powers met in Washington for the opening session of the Washington Conference for Limitation of Armament. The Monument over the Tomb was completed ten years later. Today, unknown soldiers of World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are buried in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Lightly creased.
