Letter from the Secretary of War returning a request for an
autograph
Typed letter signed: "John W. Weeks", in black ink, 8x10½.
April 9, 1921. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Mr. Hathaway: I have
your letter of April 7th and am returning the enclosure herewith, which I have
taken pleasure in signing [item not included]. Very truly yours".
John W. Weeks (1860-1926) made a fortune in investment banking,
after which he turned to politics. A Republican, he served as Alderman and
then Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, US Representative (1905-1913) and US
Senator (1913-1919). Defeated for re-election in 1918, he helped Warren
Harding secure the Presidential nomination two years later. He proved a capable
and hardworking Secretary of War under Presidents Harding and Coolidge
(1921-1925) until a stroke compelled his resignation. Normal mailing folds.
Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Heavily toned.
