JOHN W. WEEKS
A statement from Weeks issued to the Graduating Class of Ponca City High School, signed as the Secretary of War
Typed statement signed: "John W. Weeks", in black ink, 8x10½. Statement reads: "TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF THE PONCA CITY HIGH SCHOOL PONCA CITY OKLAHOMA: Take the worthwhile lessons you are learning now into real life and make the nation even better than it is to-day. Take matters seriously and find an opportunity not only to be thoroughly educated but to be useful citizens of the future". John W. Weeks (1860-1926) made a fortune in investment banking, after which he turned to politics. A Republican, he served as Alderman and then Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, US Representative (1905-1913) and US Senator (1913-1919). Defeated for re-election in 1918, he helped Warren Harding secure the Presidential nomination two years later. He proved a capable and hardworking Secretary of War under Presidents Harding and Coolidge (1921-1925) until a stroke compelled his resignation. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases.
