JOHN WENTWORTH
ALS forwarding information on the Illinois census
Autograph Letter signed: "Jno. Wentworth," 1p, 7¾x9¾. No place, no date. To: Ed. of Journal. In full: "You will find in these two slips from the Boston Journal a very correct history of the census in Illinois." Wentworth (1815-1888) was the Mayor of Chicago during the Civil War (1857-1863); the first Republican Mayor elected in the United States. He had served as a Democrat representing Illinois in the House of Representatives (1843-1851 and 1853-1855) and returned to Congress as a Republican after the War (1865-1867). Called "Long John" Wentworth because he was 6' 6", he was a personal friend of President Lincoln, first meeting him when they were colleagues in the House (1847-1849). When Lincoln's funeral train stopped at Chicago's courthouse, "Long John" carried his coffin. On another occasion, Mayor Wentworth made his mark on history when he introduced the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, from the balcony of the Tremont House Hotel to a crowd below: "Boys, this is the Prince. Prince, these are the boys." Two glue stains from verso show through at left blank margin. Ink blots at left margin touch salutation. Light vertical fold touches the "n" in Wentworth. Overall, fine condition.
