JOHN WESLEY HARDIN John Wesley Hardin addresses and signs an envelope to his wife. Envelope signed: "Hardin" his signature appears twice as part of the address, 4½x3¼. Embossed George Washington oval green 3-cent stamped envelope addressed by Hardin from jail, postmarked "Austin, Tex., 17 June", no year but probably 1878. The envelope was cut open at the left edge just nicking one letter, cutting off the first three letters of the name of the post office. The western outlaw addresses the envelope to his wife who was staying with his mother while he was awaiting trial: "Mrs. Jane Hardin in car/Mrs. E Hardin Bennitt Station/[Ben]nitt PO Redriver County, Texas." He met and married his wife, Jane Bowen, in 1872. Hardin had been arrested in August, 1877 for killing Brown County Deputy Sheriff Charles Webb and six others. He was held in an Austin jail until his conviction in September, 1878. Right edge frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
