JOHN WHITEFORD
Clipped signature
Signature: "John Whiteford", 2½x¾ piece slip attached to 3¾2¼ sheet.
Ink caption (unknown hand): "Anglo-American novelist - dramatist authoress b.
1849 ". This signature merits further research. No evidence of a John Whiteford
born in 1849 can be found, nor any author John Whiteford during that century.
Since the caption refers to an "authoress," a female reference, it may have
applied to another signature , no longer present, on the same sheet of paper.
Research has uncovered two John Whiteford's of literary significance: 1) John
Whiteford (1734-1803), a friend and patron of Scottish poet Robert Burns; and 2)
John Whiteford, anti-British, anti-war pamphleteer of the early 20th century
(Sir Uncle Sam: Knight of the British Empire!, 1940). No definite
information is available about this signature. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper
margin. Irregular edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
