Signed vintage photograph (3½x5½) of the Scottish boxer who took on Bert Gilroy for the 1939 middleweight title fight.
Photograph signed: "with best wishes/from/Johnny Clements/of/Coatbridge", in blue ink. B/w, 3½x5½. Scottish boxer Johnny Clements fought Bert Gilroy for the Scottish Middleweight championship title in 1939. Clements previously defeated Harry Sullivan, Billy Kid Andrews and Jacky Moran to qualify for the fight. Gilroy had been on a 15 bout winning streak since 1938, and he had the top bid for the fight. The matchup ended in a disqualification for Clements, Gilroy as the winner. Clements career went south after the match, falling to a 5 bout losing streak from which he never recovered. He retired in 1948 with a record of 27-32-2. He never fought another title fight. Gilroy went on to become one of Scotland's most decorated boxers in the history of the sport. Signature lightly beaded, but legible. Lightly bowed. Toned. Nicks at top edge. Corners creased. Pin-sized holes at lower corners. Ink note (unknown hand) at top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
