JOHNNY "DOUBLE NO-HIT" VANDER MEER
Signed front-page article from the original June 16, 1938 Cincinnati Enquirer reporting on Vander Meer pitching his second consecutive no-hitter game
Newspaper Article signed: "Johnny Vander Meer". B/w 14x11¼. This is a front-page article reporting on Vander Meer smashing "all records" in reference to his pitching two consecutive no-hitters in a single season. He broke the major league record as well as the Dazzy Vance's National League record for consecutive hitless innings. Johnny Vander Meer (1914-1997) threw back-to-back no-hitters for the Cincinnati Reds in 1938, the only Major Leaguer ever to accomplish this feat. (Most pitchers today don't even start on just 3 days rest.) He pitched an unequaled 21 consecutive hitless innings. A four-time All-Star, Vander Meer was a fastball/sinkerball pitcher who led the National League in strikeouts three consecutive years (1941-1943). Surface toned. Lightly creased at edges. Pin-sized holes at bottom edge of verso. Minor surface creases (not affecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
