Signed autograph letter (1935), describing fellow cast members for the film Coronado
Autograph Letter signed: "Johnny", 2 pages, 7¼x10½, front and verso. Hollywood, 1935 November 14. To "Dear Chaw", in full: "Thanks ever so much for sending me the last News. It was very interesting, and the very complimentary article concerning me was nice. Hope it's true. Finally finished 'Coronado'. It's to have a final review in a few nights. Hope it goes over. I met many new & interesting people while it was being filmed. Alice White is very cute, Jack Haley & Leon Errol are grand troops to work with, & Betty Burgess, who plays the ingénue shows good promise. Heard from my old pal Joe Cobb, who you remember as the fat boy in Our Gang. He's attending school in Dallas, Texas. It's certainly a thrill hearing from those old pals. Just had some new photos taken. I'll wait until they come through and send you one of those. Regards, your friend". Downs (1913-1994) appeared as Johnny in numerous Our Gang comedies (1923-1927). An actor who could also sing and dance, he appeared on Broadway and in many "college musicals" of the 1930s. His one directing effort, Call Me Madam, earned a Best Director nomination from the Directors' Guild of America. He later became a popular television personality in San Diego. Coronado, a musical comedy romance from Paramount featuring Eddie Duchin's Orchestra as well as the above stars, was Downs' first adult role. Horizontal and vertical fold creases - affecting "J" of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
