Picture post card signed "Best Wishes/Johnny King of Manchester/Bantam Champion/of the Wealth/Nov 1st 1931". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w sepia-toned, 3¼x5¼ overall, 3x4¾ image, one surface. British post card by Jerome. King (1912-1963) was a British boxer and two-time British Boxing Board of Control Bantamweight Champion (1932-1934, 1935-1947) and Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion (1932-1934). He had an impressive career record of 161 wins, 49 losses and 14 draws, with 74 wins and 8 losses to knockout, between 1926 and 1947. King's life outside the ring was possibly more exciting than it was inside. He volunteered for the British Navy in 1939, survived the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales by the Japanese in 1941 and then escaped to Australia after the Japanese capture of Singapore in 1942. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Signature has low contrast in places and has bled lightly, but is legible. Adhesive residue near bottom edge (does not touch signature). Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Otherwise in fine condition.
