Johnny Rutherford sends a typed letter about the importance of getting an
education even for a race car driver on May 15, 1991.
Typed Letter Signed: "Johnny Rutherford", 1p, 8½x11. Fort Worth,
Texas, 1991 May 15. On Johnny Rutherford, Inc. stationery, he writes to
Students. In part: "With this short note to you, I hope to encourage
all of you to continue your education to the greatest degree possible and to
work as hard as you can to get there...As a race driver, I have found that my
education has been the difference in being a small time racer and a three time
Indy 500 winner...Your goals should only be limited by your
imagination...Concentrate on being number ONE in what ever goal you set...Good luck
with your studies, and be the best you can be". Rutherford has won the
Indianapolis 500 three times. Through the 1993 season, he had a total of 27
Indy car victories and 23 pole positions. Rutherford ranks 5th on the all
time win list. He had five victories in the 1980 season when he won the
National Driving Championship for Indy Car competition. In 1998, Rutherford
was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and the
Motorsports Hall of Fame in America. In 1999, he announced his retirement,
but continues to serve the racing community. Fold creases not at signature. Fine
