JOHNSTON FORBES-ROBERTSON and LEWIS WALLER
Album leaf signed by two great English Shakespearean actors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a quote from Hamlet, "The readiness is all"
Autograph quotation signed: "'The readiness is all'/Hamlet"/Lewis Waller", "Johnston Forbes-Robertson.". 5x7¾. English actor JOHNSTON FORBES-ROBERTSON (1853-1936) was called the greatest Hamlet of the 19th century, and one of the greatest actors of all time, yet he disliked acting and considered himself unsuited to it. Originally playing second leads to Henry Irving, he came into his own in Shakespearean roles. George Bernard Shaw wrote the part of Caesar in Caesar and Cleopatra for him (with Robertson's wife, Gertrude Elliott, in the role of Cleopatra). Forbes-Robertson was the brother-in-law of one famed actress, Maxine Elliott, and the great uncle of another, Meriel Forbes, who married Sir Ralph Richardson. LEWIS WALLER (1860-1915) was an English actor and stage manager. He debuted on the London stage in 1883 and gained a reputation as a capable actor. His first break was as Buckingham in a 1895 production of The Three Musketeers, and he organized his own theatre company. Waller gained acclaim in Shakespearean roles, including the title role in Henry V and Brutus in Julius Caesar, and in romantic roles. Lightly toned, stained and rippled. Leaf has been torn neatly from an album or pad on left. Otherwise, fine condition.
