Extremely rare handwritten and signed letter in French from the Portuguese artist to a friend, sending him two photographs for his viewing
Autograph letter signed: "Jj de Souza Pinto", in black ink, 2 pages (integral leaf), 5½x7. In French, untranslated, but briefly speaks to his friend Jorge about sending two photographs to him. Portuguese painter José Júlio de Souza Pinto (1856-1939) was one of the forefathers of the naturalist genre, first finding an interest in painting while growing up in Porto. He attended the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto and studied under severeal successful painters before traveling to Paris, where he would stay for a number of years attending school and honing his art. It was in France that de Souza Pinto was most successful, having his artworks hung in French museums, although it also proved popular in exhibitions in Portugal. Some of his most famous paintings include La récolte des pommes de terre (1898) and Le rendez-vous (1893). He resided in France until his death in 1939. Normal mailing fold. Lightly toned, esp. on outer edges. Corners lightly worn and creased. Crayon and pencil notes (unknown hand). Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
