JOSÉ MELIS
Extremely rare signature from the pianist and Tonight Show musical director, noting his birthplace. Also signed by his wife, Sue
Signature: "Sue Melis McWhorter, Okla.", "José Melis Habana, Cuba.", and one unknown signature on verso, 9¾x2. Pianist José Melis (1920-2005) studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music, moving to America when he was 16 to continue his studies at Julliard. He played as a lounge pianist during World War II, serving as musical director for the USO's New York City branch, where he eventually met future comedian and television personality Jack Paar and formed a close friendship. Paar would bring Melis along in his career for several years, initially having Melis as his pianist when he hosted The Morning Show on CBS. When Paar moved to The Tonight Show, so did Melis, serving as the musical director from 1957 to 1962. He played an important part in the nighttime talk show, even arranging music for future President Richard Nixon's appearance in 1960 when he was only a candidate. Outside of his work with Paar, Melis was a soloist with the Boston Pops symphonic orchestra, and could be seen performing alongside Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra. He was married to his wife, Sue Melis, from 1944 until her death in 2003. Heavily toned. Slight surface creases. Fine condition.
