JOSÉ ITURBI
Program for a lecture at the Brooklyn Academy of Music featuring José Iturbi, signed and dated by him in Spanish in 1934
Program signed "Recuerdo de/Jose Iturbi/1934." in pencil. Unknown signature in pencil on front cover. B/w, 8 pages including cover, 6x9, 2 sheets folded, front and verso. Brooklyn Academy of Music program for the season of 1933-1934. This program was for a lecture-recital, entitled Piano Music of Three Centuries, with Iturbi, billed as a pianist. It was the seventh in a 15-part series, held on Jan. 9, 1934, entitled The Enjoyment of Music and conducted by Olin Downes, Music Critic for the New York Times. Born in Spain, Iturbi (1895-1980)came to the U. S. in 1929 and spent eight years as conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic. In the 1940s, he appeared in several MGM films - usually playing himself. Iturbi's biggest success came during his Hollywood years with his adaptation of Chopin's Polonaise in A Minor for the 1945 film A Song to Remember. Unfortunately, because of his Hollywood success, it caused many to undervalue him as a serious musician. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Stain along bottom edge and spine, which touches signature. Rust stain from paper clip along top edge of back cover. Light nick at top and bottom of spine. Otherwise in fine condition.
