artist, printer and author Cuevas, born in 1934, is a member of
Mexico's Rupture Generation, which broke away from the propagandizing murals
favored by the Mexican government in favor of individual freedom of expression.
An largely self-taught artistic prodigy, Cuevas was drawing book and
magazine illustrations and exhibiting his work by the time he was 14. His art is
influenced by the distorted human figures of Goya and Picasso and the lonely,
isolated characters of Dostoevsky and Kafka. His work has been displayed
worldwide, with a permanent collection in Mexico City's Mueso José Luis Cuevas,
which opened in 1992. Despite his criticism of Mexico's public art, his
country saw him fit for its National Prize of Science and Art of Mexico in 1981.
He also writes a weekly column in Excelsior, one of Mexico City's
newspapers. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Spine of book and edges of
slipcase panels are lightly discolored. Covers are lightly scratched. Corners of
covers are lightly worn and creased. Spine of slipcover is lightly scratched and
scuffed. Slipcover panels are lightly rippled. Otherwise in fine
condition.
