Inscribed photograph signed (in Spanish, loosely translated): "For/Diego Pomerenck/with all/the sincere/best wishes/of/José Soler/27-8-48". B/w, 4¼x7. Born in Spain but considering himself Uruguayan, tenor José Soler (1904-1999) was an obscure telephone operator in Montevideo until becoming an overnight sensation at age 40, first as a concert singer (Verdi's Requieum, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1944), and then on the opera stage as Radames in Aida (1945). From Uruguay, he went to Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and then to Milan's La Scala. Known for his performances in the Italian repertoire (Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti), he sang opposite Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Because these divas were tall, and Soler was very short, he was usually provided with platform shoes and a platform to stand on while singing duets with them. Corners lightly creased. Lightly bowed. Fine condition.
