JOSEF CASIMIR HOFMANN, DAVID STARR JORDAN and AUGUSTUS BINSWANGER
Page from a small book of famous births, signed by piano virtuoso Josef Casimir Hofmann, educator David Starr Jordan and Augustus Binswanger, one of the founders of the United Hebrew Relief Association
Book page signed "1844 A. Binswanger", "1851. David Starr Jordan" and "Josef Hofmann". Pencil notation in unknown hand in top right corner. 2 pages, 3¾x5½, 1 sheet, front and verso. Entries for Jan. 19 and 20 of a list of famous births. JOSEF CASIMIR HOFMANN(1876-1957), a Polish-born American piano virtuoso, was a child prodigy who studied with Anton Rubinstein. He toured the U.S. in 1887. Later, he was Director, Dean and teacher at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia. Hofmann composed under the name of Michael Dvorsky. DAVID STARRJORDAN (1851-1931) was a pacifist and educator. He was also the leading ichthyologist of his day and was anexpert witness for the defense during the 1925 John Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, also known as the "Scopes Monkey Trial". Although part of his pacifism was based on eugenics, he didn't support its more radical implications, writing in 1911 that artificial breeding of humans into supermen "would breed out of existence the two most important factors the race has won . . . love and initiative". AUGUSTUS BINSWANGER (1844-1934) was an attorney, graduating in the first class of Yale law school in 1957. He was also one of the people responsible for forming the United Hebrew Relief Association to care for Jewish refugees after the Chicago Fire of 1871. Irregular left edge from book binding. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
