Josef-Ernest Cardinal VanRoey (1874-1961) was named Cardinal of Malines ("Mechelen", a Flemish-speaking city in Belgium) in 1926, and was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in 1927. He had been active in the Catholic-Anglican dialogue known as the Conversations of Malines (1921). Called the Iron Bishop, Cardinal VanRoey was an outspoken opponent of Hitler and of Belgium's indigenous fascist movements. Scalloped at edges. Fine condition.
